KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Shrine of St. Therese
Council 12720
January
2, 2007
Inspired
by recent court decisions removing monuments containing the
Ten Commandments from public land, quite a few Knights of
Columbus councils started placing their own monuments on
Church properties under the Moses Project. The aim was to
reinforce these absolute truths to a public that
increasingly wants to treat them as “The Ten Suggestions.”
Enough interest was shown that a monument maker in Nebraska
began turning out new Ten Commandment monuments in
relatively large volume and at a reduced price we thought we
could afford. The monument is carved out of red granite with
the Ten Commandments engraved on one side and the Beatitudes
engraved on the other.
Our
Council voted to place one of these monuments at The Shrine
of St. Therese. Because of a looming deadline for the
reduced price offer, the Council decided to send a down
payment for the monument to take advantage of the sale
price. About the same time, the Bridge Club was disbanding
and they were looking for a worthy project to donate the
remaining monies they had in their treasury. After hearing
about the Moses Project the Knights were involved in, the
Bridge Club made a donation to fund about half of
the
cost of the project. Our Council funded the remaining cost
from funding raised with our monthly breakfasts.
Brother John Saenz agreed to
Chair the committee that would find a suitable location on
church property for the monument and build a foundation and
lighting for the stone tablet. Along with fellow Knights Al
Nolan, Dwight Scott, Tony Cassio and Art Padilla, the
foundation and lighting was built in front of the church
near Goodnight Ave.
Dedication of the monument
is planned for early spring when the weather warms up.
